Overview

If you are searching for a plastic surgeon to reduce the size of your large breasts, we invite you to learn more about breast reduction surgery with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Rafi Bidros. Known as reduction mammoplasty, a reduction is an invasive surgery removing excess breast tissue, reshape the breasts, and achieve an aesthetically pleasing overall look to the shape of your body. It is also performed for women, who have severe pain in the neck, shoulders, and back from the disproportionate weight distribution of large breasts. We want to help correct both health and emotional problems, because many women have body image issues due to their chest size. Dr. Bidros wants you to lead an active life without the emotional and physical discomfort often associated with having large, pendulous breasts. Your journey can begin with having a private consultation with Dr. Rafi Bidros for breast reduction surgery at his Houston, TX office.

Best Candidates

Women, who are deciding to have a breast reduction, will realize during the consultation that the process can be performed with several different strategies. Dr. Bidros asks that you have realistic expectations for what can and cannot be accomplished with this highly individualized surgery. A healthy candidate for breast reduction surgery may:

  • Have self-esteem issues in regards to having oversized breasts
  • Have breasts that are too large
  • Have breasts that limit range of motion and/or physical activity
  • Have chronic pain in the back, neck and shoulder pain caused by the weight of the breasts
  • Have noticeable indentation marks from bra straps that support heavy, pendulous breasts
  • Have red, painful skin irritation underneath the breast
  • Have breasts that are pendulous and have lost the skin elasticity
  • Have nipples that point downward
  • Have very large, stretched out areolas

Dr. Bidros also asks that while under his care (from consultation to final follow-up appointment) that you do not smoke. This will impede the surgical process and your recovery.

Surgical Technique

Under a general anesthetic, Dr. Bidros will make a specific surgical incision (around the areola, in a keyhole pattern, or in an inverted-T shape on breast) to remove the fat, breast tissue, and skin. Liposuction can also be used to assist in the procedure. Dr. Bidros will make personalized recommendations to address your condition, breast composition, amount of reduction desired, and your personal preferences.

Once Dr. Bidros makes your incision, the nipple is then removed and repositioned. The areola can also be reduced by excising skin at the perimeter. For large, pendulous breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and transplanted to a higher position on the breast (this is called a free nipple graft).

Dr. Bidros will bring your incisions together to reshape your now smaller breast. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts and close the skin.

During/After Surgery

Our post-operation nurses will apply dressings or bandages to the incisions. A surgical bra may be worn to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal. The results of your breast reduction surgery are immediately visible, the weight lifted,  and the pain associated with having large breasts will be alleviated. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and while incision lines are permanent, with proper care, the surgical scars will fade and significantly improve. Incision scars are also usually made so they can be well concealed beneath a swimsuit or bra. If you have concerns once you are discharged, please call our office to speak to a Patient Coordinator.

Breast Reduction FAQs

Covered by Insurance?

The breast reduction procedure may be covered by your insurance, depending on your insurance policy and plan. Our Insurance Specialists are available to answer any questions you have and verify your breast reduction coverage with your insurance provider. For patients who want to combine liposuction with their breast reduction, your insurance company will typically only cover the medically necessary portion of the surgery, which is the breast reduction. They consider liposuction to be a cosmetic procedure, therefore will not assist with the fees associated with liposuction. However, combining the two procedures will allow you to have one anesthesia and a shorter total recovery.

Breasts Lifted?

Dr. Bidros will reduce your breast size by removing breast fat and tissue during a breast reduction, but he will also remove excess breast skin, resulting in a lifted breast. Your areolas will also be reduced to match your new breast size.

Breastfeeding?

Your ability to breast-feed may be affected by the breast reduction; however, the majority of women who have the reduction can still breast-feed. Dr. Bidros maintains a significant amount of breast tissue during the breast reduction, which increases your chances of successfully breast-feeding.
