Overview

At MyBodyMD Plastic Surgery, we perform breast augmentation surgeries for women to enhance the beauty, femininity, and sexuality of their female figure. As a leading cosmetic procedure since 2006, breast augmentation surgery helps many women achieve a more pleasing size and/or shape for their breasts. Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Rafi Bidros, can create a customized treatment plan for each patient to change the projection, increase the fullness, create better proportions (body balance), restore lost volume, enhance self-confidence, and so much more in his breast augmentation surgeries. By making an appointment with Dr. Bidros for a private consultation in our Houston, TX office, you can discuss your aesthetic goals and concerns about surgery. Our talented plastic surgeon will listen and provide you with a realistic plan to give you the increase you want.

Reasons for Augmentation

Why have breast augmentation surgery? In private consultations, we listen as many women describe some of the following concerns about their bust line:

  • Breasts are small and under developed
  • Asymmetry (one breast is larger than the other)
  • The shape of the breasts changed after pregnancy and/or breast feeding
  • Reconstruction and augmentation are both needed after aggressive cancer treatments (mastectomy)

Besides the positive aesthetic outcomes of breast augmentation, many patients enjoy substantial psychological benefits, including enhanced self-esteem after breast implants. Breast augmentation was developed here in Houston, TX more than 40 years ago, and the surgical techniques and breast implants themselves are continuously being refined, increasing the safety and reliability of the procedure.

Implant Selection

Breast size and shape are important factors in your treatment plan, so be honest and open about your expectations when discussing this with Dr. Bidros. He will make implant recommendations based on your preferences as the implants need to be a good fit with your present breast anatomy, the elasticity of your skin, and your overall body type.

Dr. Bidros has made this process easy for you. During your consultation, you will try on implants using our MENTOR® Volume Sizing System, which includes sizes ranging from 150 cc to 775 cc. This will give us a better idea of what you truly want in size and allow you to feel confident in your breast implant choice. Next, you will learn about the differences between saline implants, silicone implants, and fat transfers to help you decide which method is best for you.

Saline or Silicone Implants

  • Within a silicone shell, saline implants are filled with sterile salt water solution. The amount of solution will vary for each patient. The shape, firmness and feel of the breast will be affected by the amount of solution in the implant.
  • Silicone implants are filled with an elastic gel, that feels and moves much like natural breast tissue.
  • Most of the implant manufacturers offer an implant warranty program to give you protection against an implant rupture. If this occurs within 10 years, they will assist in costs of the revision surgery. Most offer a lifetime warranty program – if you have an implant rupture at anytime, they will provide new implants. View MENTOR and Sientra’s warranty programs.

Fat Transfer

  • Fat transfers are becoming more popular in plastic surgery. We provide breast augmentation using fat harvested from one part of the body (tummy, buttocks, upper thighs) to increase the size or changed to shape of the breasts. Dr. Bidros will perform liposuction (under a general anesthesia) to collect the fat, so that it can be injected into your breast area. This is also a technique Dr. Bidros may perform during breast reconstruction following breast cancer to achieve symmetry in size and shape of the breast(s). The results of fat grafting to the breasts are immediate, natural, and long-lasting.

Incision Types

Dr. Bidros will provide you with a treatment plan that will include an incision that is placed in an inconspicuous area to minimize visible scarring. These incisions can be:

  • Inframammary (under the breast)
  • Periareolar (around the circumference of the areola)
  • Transaxillary (within the creases of the underarm)
  • No-Touch Technique

Dr. Bidros incorporates the use of the Keller Funnel during gel breast augmentations to decrease risk of infection, as well as trauma to the breasts. It allows him to  make a smaller incision, which reduces the risk of capsular contracture. For the majority of our patients, the Keller Funnel technique decreases the downtime during recovery. Dr. Bidros has seen great success with the Keller Funnel, and feels that it is an innovative technique.

Our board-certified Dr. Bidros will discuss these options with you during your personal consultation. Incisions also vary based on the type of implant (saline, silicone, or fat transfer), implant size, your particular anatomy, and aesthetic preference.

Implant Placement

Where to place the breast implant can be an important choice in affecting the final appearance of the implants. Newer techniques have surfaced which provide more choices for our patients. Some surgeons only utilize a single technique for every patient, but Dr. Bidros knows that every woman is different. Dr. Bidros feels that patients should have an active role in determining what is best for them. The 4 positions which breast implants can be placed are:

  • Beneath the breast tissue (sub-glandular pocket).
  • Beneath the sheet of connective tissue under the breast, but over the pectoralis muscle (sub-fascial pocket).
  • With the top of the implant sitting under the muscle, but the bottom of the implant is within the breast tissue (dual-plane technique).
  • Behind the muscle or its connective breast tissue (sub-muscular pocket).

During/After Surgery

As discussed in your treatment planning session, Dr. Bidros will prepare you for surgery with general anesthesia. Each patient will have her own breast implant surgery customized to incision technique, implant type, and implant placement. In recovery, you will be bandaged and taken care of by our post-operation nurses and monitored closely until it is time for your discharge.  You will recover in the comfort of your own home following your surgery, and return to our Houston, TX office the next day.

Our patients return to work in 5 – 7 days after plenty of rest and TLC. Patients may resume strenuous physical activities and exercise in about 4 – 6 weeks (or when released by Dr. Bidros). The results of breast augmentation are immediately visible, and typically appear high and swollen. Not to worry, this is normal and will settle down into the right position within weeks.

Breast Implant FAQs

Why Dr. Bidros?

Dr. Rafi Bidros is compassionate, highly skilled, and well trained on the latest techniques for breast augmentation. He will combine his skill and training to provide you with a positive and safe surgery experience. He only uses the highest quality saline and silicone breast implants, manufactured by Mentor and Sientra, for better results.

Implants Vs. Lift?

Breast augmentation alone does not correct breasts with severe ptosis (sagging breasts). It will be determined during your consultation if a breast lift, breast augmentation or the combination of both is best for you. Dr. Bidros will examine you and discuss the possible need for a breast lift. If you want your breasts to have a perkier, more youthful appearance, a breast lift is required in conjunction with breast augmentation, which is called an augmentation mastopexy.

Which Technique?

Each technique has advantages and disadvantages. Dr. Bidros takes into consideration the patient’s body type, breast shape, amount of existing breast tissue, skin thickness, athletic needs, concern about implant motion, and longevity. For example, if a patient has thin skin over the breast, a submuscular or dual plane would be optimal; if a patient has mild drooping of the breast, a subglandular or subfascial is more advantageous. And there are numerous factors to consider. That is why Dr. Bidros’ experience and innovation are so important to help you make this decision during your consultation.

Other Questions?

Q: Can I breastfeed following a breast augmentation?

Assuming you were able to breast-feed prior to your breast augmentation, you should have no problems. Your milk ducts are not affected during the breast augmentation procedure.

Q: Will I lose nipple sensation after the breast augmentation?

The loss of nipple sensation is uncommon; however, if you lose nipple sensation following your surgery, it will gradually return over time.

Q: Do I have to replace my implants every 10 years?

You do not have to replace your implants every 10 years. Replace your implants if you are unhappy with the size, if ptosis (sagging) occurs, or if you have an implant rupture. Keep in mind that breast implants are not intended to last a lifetime; therefore, plan to have them replaced at some point in your lifetime.

Q: What happens if you have an implant rupture?

Should the implant shell leak, a saline implant will deflate and the saline will be absorbed naturally. To see what happens during a silicone implant rupture, watch a Mentor MemoryGel® and Sientra HSC Silicone Gel implant being cut in half.
