Is your nose disproportional with the rest of your face? A rhinoplasty, “nose surgery”, or “nose job” improves the appearance and proportion of your nose, enhancing facial harmony and self confidence. Surgery of the nose may also correct impaired breathing caused by structural abnormalities in the nose. While the shape of your nose is usually the result of heredity or ethnic origin, the appearance may have been altered in a traumatic injury or from a prior surgery.
The nose is a complex geometric shape, and surgery of the nose is a delicate procedure. Changes are measured in millimeters. And due to its meticulous nature, it is one of Dr. Bidros’ favorite operations.
What can surgery of the nose accomplish?
Rhinoplasty can change:
- Nose profile, humps or depressions on the bridge
- Nose size, in relation to the other facial structures
- Nose projection in relation to your chin
- Nose width, at the bridge
- Nasal tip, that is large, undefined, drooping, or too upturned
- Nostrils that are large, wide or not in harmony with the rest o the nose
- Crooked nose
Rhinoplasty Procedural Steps:
ANESTHESIA
Dr. Bidros typically performs this operation under general anesthesia, although, it is possible under intravenous sedation. Dr. Bidros will discuss those option with you during the consultation.
THE SURGERY
Surgery of the nose is performed either using a closed or open technique. A closed rhinoplasty is where incisions are hidden inside the nose. An open procedure is where an incision is made across the narrow strip of skin that separates the nostrils. Depending on how much alteration needs to occur, different access incision is used.
Through these incisions, the skin that cover the nose are gently raised, allowing Dr. Bidros access to reshape the structure of the nose. During surgery the structures of the nose are contoured using sutures to alter the shape of the cartilage. Sometimes cartilage is added or removed to different areas of the nose to achieve the desired shape.
If the septum is deviated, it is now straightened and the projections inside the nose are reduced to improve breathing. Sometimes, the nasal valve can be improved similar to an internal “breath-right strip”.
Once the underlying structure of the nose is sculpted to the desired shape, nasal skin and tissue is redraped and incisions are closed. Additional incisions may be placed in the natural creases of the nostrils to alter their size.
THE RESULTS
Splints, internal and external, will likely support the nose as it begins to heal for approximately one week. The sutures and splints are removed with in a few days. While initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take up to a year for your new nasal shape to fully refine.
During this time you may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose as it refines to a more permanent outcome. Swelling may come and go and worsen in the morning during the first year following your rhinoplasty.
